The X15 first flew in 1959 and its US Air Force pilots would earn astronaut wings for reaching the altitude of 80km (edge of outer space as defined by the US Air Force. Karman Line at 100km is most commonly accepted definition. Yuri Gagarin was the first man in orbit from 169km to 327km in 1961)
