Two other issues that are nagging in the back of my mind:
a) global interest rates are back to effectively zero, which will make it harder for all insurance companies to generate a return on their investments. (insurance companies make money two ways: from the insurance premium and from the return on funds held).
b) US futures out to December are pricing in negative interest rates for the US. This would be very bad if it comes to fruition and holds, because again this would effectively mean insurance companies at risk of actually paying for funds held, ie negative return on investments).
Is this why the 'smart money' is trying to get out of QBE?
