If I was ScoMo I'd let Virgin fail.

Then bail out QANTAS once its on it's knees in exchange for a controlling interest in shareholding and keep it afloat through the hard years to come. Keep current management in place but part of the deal would be no monopoly driven price gouging, as the only airline QANTAS could thrive under no competition whilst having price caps on all routes.

Then sell it back to the private market once things have 'returned to normal' and competition is in place and remove all price cap regulation.

I'd only choose QANTAS over Virgin as it appears it is currently in a significantly better position. I have no actual preference to either airline.
