Some of those shorts may be held by investors who also have long interest in MSB, I would just be guessing. But unless they were very brave (foolhardy?) it would be difficult to imagine someone without a deep knowledge of MSB choosing to short a stock with a bunch of announcements expected this year including further updates on their COVID-19/ARDS treatment/trial.
It is interesting though that short interest in general appears to have been steadily increasing from around 4% to 5% over the few weeks leading up to this announcement.
