Yep you caught me red handed, I'm an amateur and I'm very ashamed of this fact (I honestly have know idea what I'm doing, just throwing darts), I'm especially ashamed of the part where I asked a question on a forum that got answered and got me looking into what I needed to find.....

I didn't find it very easy to change my email preferences, for those out there that may want to know how go about this here's the way to go:

1. Find your SRN or HIN: if using Commsec to buy and sell you'll have a HIN and it can be found when you click Portfolio>Accounts, the HIN will be just below where it says Avail Units...it's not the full HIN though it's only the last 8 characters of the HIN, I had to put X00 in front of mine and it's likely that this will work for you. If not you'll have to contact Commsec.

2. Find out who does the share registry for you company. In Commsec, this can be found when you click on the share and select About....I think there are 3 main companies that do the share registries Link Market Services, Boardroom and Computershare, there may be more....

3. Register with the share registry company for you shares by going to the share registry website and entering in you full 11 character HIN and 3 digit code ASX for the company you have shares with.

4. Once signed up with share registry change your contact preferences to email. You have to sign up to different share registry companies if your shares are not registered with the same share registry company.

I managed to change my communication preference to email before the offer is sent on the Tuesday the 28th of July, thanks for your quick reply brahms!
