Electricity generation does not need batteries in the first step. Just replaces coal and gas, when there is sun or wind. Once capacity limits are reached, then batteries make sense to spread supply over a whole day&night and consumption profile.
But with hydrogen generation, production with coal / gas at night / lull never makes any sense, actually destroys the purpose, as the hydrogen is produced with low efficiency. Only options are use of batteries, or idle periods of hydrolizers & burning energy in dummy loads while there is oversupply.
