Yes, I am always amazed as well. They could be using CFDs, but technically that is not shorting (etoro for example calls it short selling, though it is actually a contract for difference). My understanding of shorting is that they would need an attached bank account that holds the balance for what they owe. i.e. as the SP increases they will need to add more cash to the bank account, which may lead to forced covering. Contract for difference seems a safer and easier way to go if you want to bet against a stock like MQG.
