An overseas broker is your best bet. CBA for example does not allow you to short. They also charge you a nice 2-3% round trip on foreign currency if you want to trade overseas stocks. Aussie banks are a rort, charge through the roof for share trading and give little in terms of online service. You can short via CFD's but again will not get great market spreads - they have to make their coin.
The flip side with international borkers is your shares will often be held by a nominee and not in your name directly on the register - difficult for voting etc.
