The confusion around open times for trading LME futures stems from the fact that HKEX owns the LME. LME contracts start trading just after 9am HKG time on the HKEX (30 minutes ago - where, incidentally, they are trading about $130 higher than last nights close right now). They obviously trade through until the end of the London day on the LME, which is why their twilight zone is in the New York afternoon/early evening. Seems a bit counter intuitive to be closed at that time of the day, but if you follow the breadcrumbs there's always a reason why things be as they are.
