To thoroughly break the analogy, we started with 30% of a potential watermelon due to be picked this harvest, but it refuses to ripen, the gardener keeps giving himself a pay rise and offering slices of the future watermelon to others to pay for extra mulch and lab testing the compost. Now we have 5% of a potential watermelon to be picked, maybe next harvest... (but it's okay because nobody else's watermelons are ripening either, so when we do finally pick it it'll be worth a fortune). Meanwhile the gardener is planning a comfortable retirement and we are all going hungry!
