The unknowing who have stop losses?
I submit that using a stop loss is a considered trading technique. The opposite of buy and hold.
If they get hit by a short seller then they have just been "hit" by someone else using a considered trading technique.
In contemporary parlance, both are "big enough and ugly enough" to take care of themselves.
However, as a buy-and-hold low trading investor, "I am merely a lamb to the slaughter" as a sharp-as-glass businessman once told me with a smile.
All IMVHO.
