All companies will halt trading when news which may impact the price of their stock is being released. This has been done for generations. Prior to today ’s technology where news is disseminated very quickly, trading was halted to allow this news to be spread around the world, reach all shareholders and then reopen.
The trading halts may be longer for illiquid stocks so the market makers can get client orders in line after the news is released - but before reopening the stock. However, if a large cap stock is halted, pending news. Today, the halt would be relatively short as the news is disseminated rapidly.
