I don’t think you meant to say that an entirely gas fuelled HiSmelt creates more gas than it uses. Rather ( in a mixed fuelled HISmelt) some of the carbon reacts with hydrogen ( and oxygen?) during metal reduction to make syngas byproduct
it’s along time since I was across the simplest understanding of HISmelt but I recall a belief of one of the inventors that torrified wood (ie partially reduced biomass) may enhance reduction and gas production.
