actually I thought I'd chime in on this one, HISMELT can run on gas. it can be retrofitted with different energy sources, gas is preferable, they're looking to use hydrogen or "green" gas alternatives as a reductant for smelting steel.

also the gas needed to power a HISMELT is actually not much, as it becomes renewable and creates its own gas during the process of reduction, meaning X amount of gas goes in, but more gas will actually be produced and can be used to indefinitely power the plant/s

for example, when hydrogen gas is passed over iron, copper, lead ect. it removes the oxygen from them and reduces them to their corresponding metal.
