dtab - before I respond to your question about road distances between Adina and the Renard mine site I want to ask everyone to stop and acknowledge your brilliant lateral thinking in a post of 2 March (post no: 72713071). Back then I had addressed the closure of the Renard mine from the aspect of speeding up the extension of Route 167. You responded by asking if anyone had considered if Winsome could repurpose the plant at Renard given the similarities in a spodumene concentrator and a diamond plant. Mate, very rarely do I see a display of the smarts like what you showed with your question. Genuinely, kudos to you.

Back on the road distances, Here is a page from the La Grande Alliance website (and here is another to help you navigate the website). Extending Route 167 (Road 167) from the Renard minesite to the Trans Taiga H'way is section 4 of the plan. You will note that Renard is marked as 642-240. I interpret the "642" to be the point on Route 167, at the Renard minesite and the current northern end of the road, which is 642 km from the southern start of Route 167 (which is a couple of hundred clicks south of Chibougamau). On the map Route 167 meets the Trans Taiga Hway at 814-000 so according to the map the full length of the extension from Renard to the Trans Taiga Hway is about 172 km.

In the past I spent far too much time trying to pinpoint on the map where Adina is. I finally settled with the notion that Adina is just to the north of the 750-000 marker which would mean the planned extension between Renard and Adina, by road, would be close enough to 110 km. Also, that suggests that Adina north to the Trans Taiga Highway is more like 60 km than the 50 km I indicated in my post from this morning. (I am fairly sure that Chris Evans has indicated the ice road Winsome was proposing to build would have been about 60 km in length.)

The other critical piece of information on that schematic is: "Route follows ridges, avoids water bodiesand crosses rivers attheir narrowest point. Avoid highlysensitive areas andprotected areas". In other words this extension will be a long and winding road and will be much longer than point-to-point measurements would suggest.

I have cross-checked my assumptions and calculations by referring to La Grande Alliance Infrastructure Feasibility Studies - Interim Report from October 2022 which shows, at page 18, that the actual road distance from Renard up to Trans Taiga Highway is expected to be between 170 km and 235 km. So yes, my estimate that Adina is about 110 km north by road from Renard and the Trans Taiga H'way is another 60 km by road north of Adina seems reasonable.

Note I have read elsewhere that the distance from Renard to Trans Taiga H'way is about 125 km but that would be as the crow flies, not by road (there are no roads in that part of Quebec so of course no-one talks about distances in terms of road distances).

Happy for people to point out any errors in logic or maths I've made.

Also, some steak knives. Here is a link to Stornaway's website where they give lots of detail about the Renard mine development.
