I don't think this will stop the mine, just the location of the tailings dam will have to change.
“Crucially, my decision is not to stop the mine,” Plibersek said. “The company has indicated to me that it has assessed around four sites and 30 potential options for the tailings dam.“Protecting cultural heritage and development are not mutually exclusive. We can have both.”
Plibersek said the protection order would take effect immediately and would not affect the development of the open-cut goldmine itself, which was approved in March 2023.
