Robert Hunter is a man who epitomises his father's words. Here is a man that worked 80-hour weeks for most of his adult life, only recently slowing down to 65 hours, upon strong advice from his mortified doctor.
Even his own father, who related the maxim that Hunter lived his life by, has now asked him to slow down.
Hunter's first big break came when he was 27, when a chartered accountacy business on the brink of bankruptcy came up for sale. In just 18 months, Hunter turned it around and brought the company into the top two per cent ranked accounting companies in Australia.
When Hunter was 32, he bought Souvenir World, a retail business that specialises in duty free, souvenirs and newsagencies all at once. In six months, Hunter turned the retail chain profitable.
By the time he was 40, he was notified that Souvenir World was the third largest newsagency in Australia.
Since 1992, he has been a philanthropic investor in a little-known company that initially researched medical products for the detection of cervical cancer and sexually transmitted diseases. He joined the board in 2005. A year later, he became chairman.
It seems that everything Hunter touched turned to gold but his no-nonsense attitude is clear in his advice.
"It's simple," Hunter says. "Find something you like, focus on that, work very hard at it and believe in yourself."
