Every decent investor has made those mistakes. When I first started, I considered those losses to be the cost of learning a new knowledge set (like a uni tuition fee). The important thing is to work out what went wrong, why it went wrong, and what you could do in the future to avoid the mistake again armed with your lived experience.
ETFs are a great way to avoid overexposure to specific risks. There is still value in holding individual stocks as you can tailor your holding to your needs and growth vs risk. About8% of my portfolio is in an ETF at the moment (VAS is a good one), and I’m aiming to increase to 15-20% on dips. The rest of my portfolio makes me more money, but I know I don’t have to watch the portion in VAS.
