Yep I agree, his point was more that you don't want invest in companies that might be in the bottom 20%. Probably more than three quarters of companies on the ASX are possible candidates for that bottom 20% and should be avoided using this strategy. The point was to avoid all of these on the chance that they will be in the bottom 20% performance wise. Of course some of these poor quality, cyclical companies will generate excellent short term returns - though picking these is a specialist skill that I am not good at.
