Point taken, however, obviously not all 'misses' are equal. Surely you agree it's not such an absolute outcome of 'goal achieved or failed'. In my scenario, not just the 'over optimistic' people here, as you suggest, will see a $2 mill cash positive as a negative should it be achieved.
I agree the market seriously evaluates statements from company CEO's as to future company performance, and the SP moves accordingly, but I believe even the analysts are not going to be overly focussed on the ultimate 'failure' to achieve a goal over a very good performance immediately after the most current quarter.
Point taken, however, obviously not all 'misses' are equal....
