I start with a stock screener looking for fundamental metrics of value. Of the options put forward I'll pick a few to investigate further. Read through their financial reports and any other material that I feel I need to understand their buisness and economic outlook.

Lastly I got to hotcopper as this is just about the only place I know of where actually every day investors come together to talk about companies they have vested interests in. Generally the discussion focus's on metrics that are important to the company's financial well being and is great for gauging general outlook as well.

No one saw this coming and its certainly not anyone's fault (here anyways). Its really helpful that people put forward their ideas without fear of recrimination if things don't go the direction as expected.

I would seriously hope that people continue to freely and without fear put forward their views and research.
