A freight train derailed at Bowmans, north of Adelaide on the main Adelaide to Port Augusta (South Australia)/Perth (Western Australia)/Darwin Northern Territory) rail line mid afternoon on Thursday 5 May 2022. (Bowmans is broadly in line with the main highway's Port Wakefield, which is to the west of the railway line).
It means Melbourne (and Adelaide) intermodal (container) trains to either Adecannot operate without taking an extremely lengthy detour from Melbourne via Albury, Cootamundra West, Parkes and Broken Hill, although Sydney to Perth trains will be unaffected.
LAU has about 400 railable containers a month moving across the Nullarbor by rail, and unfortunately Thursday and Friday are peak loading days ex Melbourne.
