The NSW Main South line is closed again due to Picton flooding, so trains can't easily operate between Melbourne and Brisbane without undertaking a huge (and slow) deviation via Adelaide and Broken Hill.
Unfortunately our intercapital railways mostly lack alternative routes, unlike in Europe or larger Asian nations.
