Very limited numbers of coal trains have resumed through Maitland NSW, largely aimed at supplying coal-fired power stations south of Newcastle NSW such as ORG's Eraring.
It appears that intermodal (container) trains may resume on Monday 18 July, meaning almost a two week break in these important and well used freight trains. Not ideal, but at least the Maitland floods weren't unprecedented. For that we have to go back to before many of us were born.
However, LAU continues to benefit from good volumes between Melbourne and Perth, epitomised by this April 2022 video that shows the 'Toll train' - a premium intermodal - with eight LAU railable containers. Double stacking of containers is impossible between these two cities due to overhead bridges and (close to Adelaide) a number of tunnels, but many trains from Adelaide to Perth/Darwin have one container stacked on top of another:
