NZ just kept their mouth shut because that's the coward/easy thing to do.
China deserve to be called out on many issues (South China Sea, human rights issues, COVID-19 outbreak etc).
It's no different to having a huge customer, that does some very poor unethical things but you keep dealing with them because they are your cash cow. Sometimes it's worth having ethics and being able to sleep at night as opposed to supporting these kind of customers.
Australia have slowly started down this path, and China are reacting in the typical fashion we've come to expect, with the only difference this time is China have done it on multiple fronts further alienating themselves from the rest of the world.
As I said before, it's a shame we are so reliant on them because we'd have cut ties a long time ago.
