Problem with shorting nowadays is that we don't often see a short-covering rally like we used to. Far too often the shorts get covered either via off-market trades and return of loaned shares, or via algorithmic trading that covers the shorts via thousands of tiny trades at prices that won't push up the market price much at all. Like dribbling tiny drops of water into a large lake...!
