I got payment many years ago that I knew I was not due. I emailed and followed up with a call to the issuer to point out the mistake (both by phone and in writing) and they denied there was any payment made to me by mistake and treated me like I was some sort of a dill.
I spoke with an accountant and also notified the ATO of the situation formally to cover myself.
