Not disputing that there may have been better ways to spend it, but surely fewer shares on offer is good for long term holders, as it means each remaining share is worth more, and due to there being fewer shares there is less money going out on dividends (or higher dividends per share).
(of course this is at the margins, not a huge difference per share from 50 million in a 2 billion market cap company)
