I find it interesting that there is no definitive answer!

The only other thing i could find,was this.

The company can make the journal entry for repurchase of common stock by debiting
the treasury stock account,and crediting the cash account.
Treasury stock is a contra account to the capital account ( eg. common stock )in the equity section
of the balance sheet,

The only other thing i can think, is the company does not have to cancel the shares until
the buy back has ended?

Like many things with listed stocks.......To many grey areas.
In a perfect world the company, would state their objective!
