I think Skol is probably correct in stating that gold no longer has the same kind of relevance in modern economies. You criticise him for voicing a contrary opinion because he is saying something that you (and I) don't like to hear. The time to sell was at $17. We missed out or maybe weren't holding at that time. With all the negativity in the world at present, if gold is not capable of shining brightly in this economic and political climate, I can't see how it is ever again going to be valued as a safe haven for money.
