This could have been a simple deal - buy the company lock stock and barrel and then sell off the parts you don't want in a year or so. BHP chose to flag their disdain for South Africa by insisting that Anglo first divest its South African assets! What they don't get is that Anglo is part of the fabric of South Africa, just as BHP is part of Australia - It is a case of national pride, especially when dealing with a government that is hard socialist at its core. I am not a BHP shareholder, but if I was I would demand that Henri and the directors resign.

South Africa regulator likely would not have approved I heard, not sure how true that is but apparently they are not the biggest fans of BHP.
