BSM looked at about 4 different methods of treating its refractory Au tailings the xstrata albion process was one there was another system almost as good as Albion, also the original meaning of refractory ore is that it needs to be roasted in a refractory to recover the gold.
when the gold under high heat (roasting) oxidation causes the gold to seperate out from the gangue in the furnace (from memory) one can allways use that system to , there was a paper written recently about refractory processing maybe becoming more attractive due to new methods of scrubbing the smelters exhaust gases to prevent pollution

I would think roasting ore may be high OPEX but doubt the CAPEX would be that high so may be usefull for small mines
