While I'm not thrilled about the delay in getting Renard on our books and moving forward i can see the reasons why they chose the 8.5 million option. Renard while it adds a great asset to our books it also comes with huge costs. The power bills alone may run into 100k possibly or more, in the Canadian environment it would need to be kept at an even temperature to make sure the electronics don't draw condensation.
The draw on the power grid when this fires up will be huge, they may even need to warn the grid before they flick the switch to the on position and even when shutting down.
Having some knowledge in the paper mill industry and news paper business i know these machines eat money daily just to keep going with minimal maintenance. The motors and the drives will be hideously expensive that require routine maintenance costing $20.000 for minor repairs. Need to get an outside expert to tune up a fancy piece of equipment and you will be looking at $150.000 for a weeks work.
It would be a gun to our head in terms of ongoing costs that we have no control over, hence the need to a MOU to secure funds to keep the wolf from the door. I've never been inside one of these plants but I'm guessing they are huge that may even dwarf a paper mill?
