I think you were right that traders are staying away today. Otherwise the usual day trader pattern of pump-and-dump would have taken place already. These buyers seem more like people seeing potential in holding for a bit. Perhaps past performance of the stock has burnt a few traders and encouraged them to give it a wide berth.
