I disagree, these pumped hydro projects are excellent value for money. EVN should ride it all the way. I lost out on the Kidston pumped hydro when the Japanese bought out the company. Excellent returns. The whole green energy thing ought to be approached from an investment risk perspective. This stuff is just too lucrative. Solar makes money if they can sell it for more than about 8 cents/kWhr. Just the cost of coal to generate a kWhr is 10 cents, so you need someone to build and operate the power station for free. Ok, sure, there's no night time peaking, but our Kia EV can now be connected to the grid, soak up solar during the day, feed into grid at night, with the new connection system that's now become available this year. I think the existing coal fired power stations should be extended in their operation and as they get closer to end of life and less reliable for night time production, there'll be plenty of EV's with incentives to sell some of their stored battery power into the grid.
