if the 85yo doesn't need to be in hospital, then why pay the fees unless the person is incontinent or can't walk...? this is the economic reality families face.
the other large hurdle is the guilt of the children. it's not just the fees... giving your parent to a nursing home because your family won't care elicits guilt that many families can't bear..
the point is that nursing homes are generally a poor business.. they're always in supply because residents fund the development via RADs, so while CEOs go around lauding the free capital they get, everyone else gets it too... only the top operators make good margins... most are non profits that don't have the incentive to build flashy homes and market wine and cable tv for 50 bucks per day, in addition to all the other fees.
