    It's only ~$1000 a pill in countries that recognise US pharmaceutical patents. As most of the world can't afford that, companies in India are making generic versions at a fraction (thousandth) of the cost. Gilead is beginning to make deals with these companies to get a cut, so they don't lose out completely.
