There are already several battery techs that are "On paper" far superior to Li-ion tech used in EV's today, the catch is that each one has to overcome the weight problem. The weight of an EV is already heavier than that of a comparable ICE car. The heavier a car is causes it to travel for less range so you get stuck in an endless loop of adding more battery to go farther but also increasing the weight which make you not travel as far.
Lithium is the Lightest of elements that can be used so whichever tech comes out will likely still use Lithium.
One other note on this... from the time the first li-ion battery was created and proven until it was commercially used was over 20 years. This is because testing takes forever... and you want to be sure you are not putting an exploding device in a car before it goes to market. Just ask the guys at Samsung about the Note 8. They only made a slight chemistry change and the phones were blowing up left and right, imagine if that were a car?
