Just a bit of observation. The thing that looks to have been the series of events that triggered this, the fall over of the rail to port and the port loading is a combination of rain and breakdown and maintenance on the lines or DMBT or both.
I did not spot any rain events in July or August, but it looks like there were. Can't ship wet coal. Or load it. Heavier and slushy, and very dangerous for a ship in a big sea. . These quarters cash flow were critical to this cash starved indebted one mine operation. That with the sharp drop in coking coal prices due to the downward spiral in China.
The logistical problem didnot occur to me, as the queue of ships waiting to load off Hay Point was commonly around 40--50 for a long time.Year or more. Thus the demurrage which can easily run to $30,000 day (US) and even 50+ for the larger ones. Since late August from memory the queue has dropped to 12-15. This I would regard as healthy number. There are four loading berths at DBMT and two at Hay Point.(BHP) These have seen much faster turnaround lately. From hindsight following the Q. BCB report, a big line there indicates there are problems unresolved in the rail/loading system, meaning much lower loading volumes and high demurrage. From now on if there is a smaller number of vessels waiting, all good. If there is a buildup cash flow to the miners such as BCB will be affected. In the recent case, critically. If the line is building fast, bail. If it is shrinking fast, positive. It is pretty much too late to learn this lesson, for me, but if anyone wants to check that barometer of performance of the loading system, Google: Marine Traffic; Global, and move to the view of Hay Point. You can zoom in and out.
You can see how many ships are loading, where, the details of those ships, and so on. Cannot though find out how much they are loading and for whom. That would be good.
I'm stuffed here anyway but it might do someone some good.
