I'll put my science hat on here and clarify that description. Epigenetics is how your environmental exposures, diet, stress etc affect the biochemical properties of your DNA.
Not all epigenetic changes are reversible, esp not DNA methylation. Smoking changes your DNA methylome practically permanently. If you had quit smoking 30 years ago, we could still detect a methylome signature that confidently shows you were a past smoker. Abnormal methylation of several genes are known to be associated with certain cancers.
And epigenetic changes certainly do not change how your DNA is "read". The extent of that gene being read and produced, surely. But not the workings of the machinery.
