Ford Motor stock extends rally past 5-year high after RBC analyst raises rating, boosts price target
Shares of Ford Motor Co. kept rallying in premarket trading Thursday, after RBC Capital analyst Joseph Spak turned bullish, citing more confidence in the automaker's financial targets and
on the belief that the F-150 Lightening electric truck is likely a "watershed" moment for the company and the industry.
The stock climbed 3.0% ahead of Thursday's open, after running up 8.5% on Wednesday
to close at a five-year high in the wake of the company's commitment to make electric vehicle sales 40% of global sales by 2030.
The F-150 Lightening "not only protects its golden goose, but expands the F-150 franchise opportunity via unique features like Intelligent Backup Power," Spak wrote in a note to clients.
"Ford already very strong on commercial fleet, but now offering a more compelling product via electrification and connectivity that could increase its share in this profitable segment."
Ford's stock, which is on track to open at the highest price seen during regular-session hours since December 2015, has run up 58.1% year to date through Wednesday, while shares of rival General Motors Co. has climbed 39.5%

Tesla may be losing its electric-vehicle crown as Ford's Mustang Mach-E sales heat up
Ford’s electric Mustang Mach-E appears to be cutting into Tesla’s comfortable lead in the electric-vehicle market right out of the gate.
The Mustang Mach-E was the third highest selling electric car model in the US in its first full months of sales, according to a report from Morgan Stanley on Thursday.
The car trailed behind Tesla’s Model 3 and Model Y in February.
While Ford has only sold 6,614 units of the new SUVs to date, Tesla’s share of the US electric-car market fell to 69% in February, down from 81% in the prior year, an earlier Morgan Stanley report dated March 3 found.
What’s more, the Mustang accounted for nearly all of Tesla’s market-share losses, the bank said.
Ford’s
first-quarter vehicle sales were up over 23% year-over-year, the automaker said Thursday, with electrified vehicle sales rising 74%, thanks mainly to the Mustang Mach-E and F-150 PowerBoost Hybrid sales.
