Actually, the NT and SA are the only states/territories in Australia which allow Uranium mining. WA had a couple of years where it was allowed and they gave 4 projects the go ahead but only 2 have met the conditions to advance before it was banned again.
NT has a huge history of uranium mining with Ranger Mine operating for over 40 years and was in the top 3 producers globally at the time. There was also Nabarlek Mine.
It is a bit harder to get U Mine approval now, with all the sacred sites and indigenous rights to the land. Plus, you need stringent environmental conditions to be approved by the minister themselves. However, it is definitely legal and a pretty good time to be exploring for it with current U prices.
