People were dying due to radiation leaking from even before the event near multiple reactors.

The problem is government will hide under the guise that people get cancer normally too (high incidence in Japan) and it is difficult to classify the cancer as being from radiation. If they acknowledge that the cancer was due to radiation, TEPCO (the energy company) would have to pay billions in compensation!

Now they are going to release millions of tonnes of radioactive water into the ocean thereby affecting all the ocean, its creatures and consumers of those products.
