Modacrylic is a chemical copolymer (a combination of two polymers) that can be produced as a fibre for textile use. It was first patented in 1973. It is based on polymeric acetonitrile.
Polymeric acetonitrile itself is highly flammable, so in order to give it flame resistance it is necessary to combine it with another hologen-containing polymer. Polyvinyl-bromide or –chloride are the most common choices. The proportion of the halogenated component can range anywhere between 15% and 65%.
Products based upon modacrylic such as Drifire therefore are not competitors for the Alexium products.
