Not true - lots of solar and wind farms connect to the grid with zero energy storage. In fact, the grid acts as a large 'temporary' energy storage reservoir where supply is exactly matched to demand at every five minute interval. (There may be different intervals in other countries, but the dispatch interval is five minutes in Australia.)
Sorry, I'm not trying to disenfranchise you GoldStriker but I do feel I should clarify certain points.
Re: heating storage, I believe it would be the residual surface heat below the canopy and the difference between that and the top of the tower that allows it produce some electricity at night.
