Previously I referred to a German study in relation to an investigation into the use of the measles virus as a therapeutic cancer treatment. The study is titled Improved Production Strategies for Oncolytic Measles Viruses as a Therapeutic Cancer Treatment published 11 August 2023. The oncolytic measles virus has the advantage of natural tumor specific properties and the possibility for genetic engineering but the downside is the high therapeutic dosage rate which creates a bottleneck in the manufacturing process. The dosage numbers referred to are 10⁹–10¹¹ TCID₅₀ or more. It appears, from my cursory reading of the Abstract for the study, that in order to remove the bottleneck a lot of work will need to be done to address the manufacturing challenges.

The numbers create an interesting comparison. Further, we know that the first Bile Duct Cancer patient achieved a Complete Response at 1 x 10⁷. I get the impression that Professor Fong and his team have made a remarkable breakthrough, not only in the derivation of an OV with all the advantages of natural tumor specific properties and the possibility for genetic engineering, but also in the manufacturing process.
