Chatting with Met guy at work. H2SO4 preferred because it’s cheap and less corrosive. Rough numbers about $200 vs $1700. H2SO4 gives off hydrogen sulphide which is nasty but easily dealt with. HCl can give off chlorine gas not nice to deal with and is a problem. If you needed HCl in large quantities you’d probably just make it on site as required as it’s expensive to transport although did mention it’s relative closeness to a port is advantageous and opens up options.

HCl capex will be higher due to corrosive nature and just having to spend more on better vessels etc.

Whilst HCl is not preferred it’s not the end of the world and larger players deal with it all the time.
