The vision loss is caused by progressive death of rod and cone cells in the retina. It is my understanding that, once dead, these cells cannot be replaced. So I would find it unlikely that patients could experience a complete reversal to normal vision. However, there would be a percentage of rods and cones that are damaged but not yet dead. Replacement of the defective gene (as per PYCs treatment) might allow these cells to clear out the cell debris and pigment which is causing them to stop functioning. This would result in an improvement of some lost vision. Given that young patients still retain most of their rod and cone cells, they stand to gain the most by not losing them. Patients with some vision loss look likely to regain some and then not lose more. Elderly patients with little residual vision might perhaps stand to benefit the least, which would be a pity as they have lost the most. But, as I indicated earlier; dead cells can’t (yet) be replaced. Anyway, that’s my understanding of the situation. If I’m mistaken please let me know.
