    Long leaseholds are common in many jurisdictions but not here. In the UK, approximately 20% of housing stock is leasehold rather than freehold. However it is not an automatic right that you can renew the lease at the end of its term. The most well-known example is that Britain acquired the province of Hong Kong in 1898 on a 99 year lease which we all know had to be handed back to China in 1997. It is still relatively easy to sell an interest in a property if the lease has a long term to run, but the closer it gets to expiry the less value the "right to use" has. Once the term ends it is very difficult to take the buildings with you. Of course commercial interests dictate what the owner of the land will want to do at that time. It might be in their interest to lease it to the same party for a further term but as the owner in this case is the Chinese Government they might have other ideas.
