Amid all the positives we can draw from today’s fantastic announcement one thing bothers me. What does “volume production” mean?
Back in the 70s and 80s I was a runner. I used to tell people I was a distance runner until it was pointed out to me that “distance runner” is a meaningless term without giving an indication of the distance being covered. Technically speaking, running 100m is distance running.
So what is volume production? We want to believe it means high volume but it could equally mean medium volume or even low volume. Do we even know if volume production is an industry term and if so what sort of volume does it imply? I imagine the release intends to convey that the production volume is high but at the moment we can’t tell. If Izlush's memory is correct (700 million chips) that would mean around 5,800 wafers at 120,000 chips a wafer (I think Barrelsitter suggested this). Is that high volume? It's certainly a volume.
That’s just my opinion folks!
